Robin Meeks, MBA '06“My MBA is a toolbox that I take to my job everyday.” Robin Meeks earned her undergraduate degree in mass communication from California State University, Dominguez Hills. After earning her Eller MBA with concentrations in entrepreneurship and marketing, she secured a position with Kellogg Company in Battle Creek, Mich., as an associate brand manager. On choosing Eller: I was looking for a program that was quantitative in nature. I also wanted a smaller program to ensure I received enough attention from the instructors. Takeaways from Eller Teamwork and communication. My current position requires me to lead a cross-functional team and teamwork is heavily stressed. Additionally, Kellogg culture centers on relationships – so the ability to play in a large sandbox is a very important skill. The ability to communicate ideas and craft a message is also very important. Knowing the quantitative information is very important but without the ability to communicate the information – the numbers don’t mean much. Looking back: I think about how hard the first semester was but how I survived the entire thing and grew from the experience. I think about how much I’ve grown as a person. I think about how resilient I’ve become and realize that there is not much I can’t accomplish once I put my mind to it. What an Eller MBA has done for me: My MBA is a toolbox that I take to my job everyday. When faced with a task, I know I can open that box and find an Eller MBA tool that will help me craft a solution. My MBA also provided a much-needed boost to my confidence. While I may not be the flashiest or be the biggest personality – I know that my thought processes are strong and can stand up to scrutiny. Advice for incoming MBAs: Be open to the experience. Be prepared and know what you want to do once you graduate. You will need to be very focused on finding a new position – for your internship and upon graduation. If you are undecided about your career path then you may be setting yourself up for failure before starting your first class.
